Mangalore, Aug 9, 2012 : Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation observed Quit India Day on August 9, Thursday at Tagore Park, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Quit India movement.
In his inaugural address, Ajith Kumar Hegde S., commissioner of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA), spoke about the significance of Quit Indian Movement. Comparing the days of the freedom struggle to free India, he said that all the citizens of India cannot really be called free even today.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranganath C. Kini, corporator of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), said that India now needs a Knit India Movement to unify all the people.
Delivering the presidential address, A. Sadananda Shetty, president of Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation (MGPF), said that students must shape their future serving society. He said that, although India can compete at the international level in fields such as education, agriculture, technology, and medicine, incidents such as the recent attack on young people in the home stay only hinder the country’s progress.
Ajith Kumar Hegde hoisted the national flag in the presence of students from various schools. The organizers also held elocution and patriotic singing competitions for the students.
