Mangalore, Feb 25: Rajani Dugganna has been elected as Mayor of Mangalore and Rajendra as deputy mayor at the Mayor’s election held at Mangalore City Corporation on February 26, Friday.
The election for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of Mangalore was held in two processes. Rajani Dugganna won by 35 votes and elected as the thirteenth mayor, while her opponent Bharathi Dinesh recieved 20 votes and missed the turn.
This year, the post of mayor of Mangalore is reserved for women and that of deputy Mayor is reserved for the backward classes. Accordingly, Rajani Dugganna, thrice corporator and the current deputy mayor has been selected for the post of Mayor for this year.
While it comes to the post of Deputy Mayor, two nominations were filed by Rajendra and Basheer Ahmad, unfortunately, Basheer Ahmad’s nomination application was disqualified due to the non submission of caste certificate, which was against the corporation rule. Hence Rajendra was declared as the deputy mayor for the present year.
The term of the current Mayor, Shankar Bhat and Deputy Mayor Rajani Dugganna are already over. By March 1, Rajani Dugganna and Rajendra will take charge as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.
