Mangalore, August 23: Raksha Bandhan is celebrated Today, Aug 24, Tuesday. On this day, sisters tie decorative threads called “rakis” on their brothers’ wrists and brothers promise to protect their sisters. The “raki” is therefore a symbol of love, respect, and protection.
The meaning of the raki, however, has changed with times. Although it originally strengthened the bond between brothers and sisters, rakis are today tied on the wrists of colleagues, neighbours, and class mates to encourage peaceful co-existence.
The origins of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to certain historical incidents and legends. When Indra lost the battle to Vritra, his wife tied a raki around his wrist to ensure his victory. When Krishna was bruised, Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, tied a piece of her sari to his wrist to stop the flow of blood. Touched with the gesture, Krishna swore to protect her from all harm.
The festivities start at day break with the family waking up daily, taking a ritual bath, and worshipping the deities. Sisters then perform the aarati for their brothers, apply a tilaka on their foreheads, sprinkle some rice on their heads, and then tie the rakis to the accompaniment of mantras. Brothers accept the sweets offered by their sisters and promise to protect them in times of need. They then give gifts and sweets to their sisters.
Several days ahead of the festival, markets are flooded with colorful rakis; and girls start shopping for colorful rakis, which are available in all sizes, shapes, colors, and designs. The markets are also flooded with colorful clothes, sweets, and gifts.
