Mangalore, January 15, 2025: Renowned artist Ramdas Kamath Shevgoor of Shevgoor Fine Arts fame, passed away at 06:45 AM on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 in Manipal due to age-related illness. He was 78. He is survived by his son, Siddarth Shevgoor, and daughter, Deepa Shevgoor. His wife, Sandhya Shevgoor, a noted writer of Konkani short stories, predeceased him in 2011.
A scion of the illustrious Shevgoor family of artists in Mangaluru, Ramdas Kamath Shevgoor was the son of L. K. Shevgoor, one of the region’s pioneering graphic designers and portrait artists. He pursued formal art education at the JJ School of Art in Mumbai and continued his father’s legacy at Shevgoor Fine Arts following L. K. Shevgoor’s demise in 1966.
Ramdas Shevgoor was widely acclaimed for his mastery in portraiture, particularly in oil painting. His lifelike portraits adorn the walls of numerous educational institutions and other establishments across the coastal district. Notably, many portraits in the Hall of Fame at the World Konkani Centre were created by him. Over a prolific career spanning more than five decades, he painted thousands of portraits, earning widespread acclaim for his ability to capture the essence and spirit of his subjects with remarkable precision.
Ramdas Kamath Shevgoor’s leaves behind an indelible legacy of outstanding contributions to art and culture, enriching his field and touching the lives of all who knew him.
LAST RITES: The public may pay their respects to his mortal remains at his residence, ‘Navadurga,’ Tatau Road, Opposite Sharada Press, Maroli, from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM on Thursday, January 16.
