Mangalore jan 25, 2013 : If the fair price shop commodities are targeted at the economically weaker sections of the society, in order to help them avail ingredients like rice, sugar and kerosene at subsidized prices, there have often been complaints that the quality of the food ingredients supplied was not satisfactory.
A recent instance wherein a consumer who purchased rice from a fair price shop in Mangalore, to his utter dismay found rat faeces in the rice, has underlined the need for the authorities to do a regular checking of the quality of the ingredients supplied to be distributed through ration shops.
As far as the recent instance goes, the consumer, as usual had purchased 10 kgs of rice and had taken it home. But, his mother who opened the rice pack, found rat droppings inside and the matter was immediately brought to the notice of the fair price shop owner.
But, the shop owner expressed his helplessness saying he had nothing to do with it and even asked the consumer to contact the department concerned which supplied the rice to the shop.
Meanwhile, what is learnt is that the officials of the departments concerned seemed least bothered about this issue and an official even gave a suggestion that the rice be returned to the shop so that it could be replaced.
However, there was no assurance to check the quality of the food ingredients supplied to fair price shops, thereby pinpointing the lackadaisical approach of the authorities to a pertinent issue.
