Mangalore, Jan 6, 2013 : Prof. Alban Bernard Castelino, a former professor of St Aloysius College and a renowned theatrical personality died here on January 6, Monday. He was 90 and was ailing since some time. Prof. Castelino is survived by his wife Gertrude Cecilia Castelino, a daughter and three sons.
Prof. Castelino was a multi-faceted personality who contributed immensely to the cultural and social arena too apart from the educational field. He was also a good writer, actor, director and musician.
Born on December 11, 1924, Castelino did his schooling at St Sebastian’s Higher Elementary School, Bendore. He graduated from St Aloysius College and then went on to do his MSc from St Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
As a teaching faculty at St Aloysius later on, Prof. Castelino always stood apart from the rest due to his distinctive teaching methodologies using print, radio and sometimes even TV media.
He even used to contribute science writings to Raknno Konkani weekly and was the editor of the Book on Konkani folklore named ‘Vovio ani Verse.’ His deep interest in theatre made him part of popular plays like Xipai Santh, Samiochi Pashany, ‘Khursache Vatter’ etc.
Prof. Castelino’s funeral cortege will leave his residence near Kadri Tollgate on January 8 to St Sebastian Church, Bendore, at 4 pm. This will be followed by a public homage and mass.
