Mangalore, Nov 28: In the wake of protests by Hindu activists against the moves to demolish the famous ‘Ashwatha Katte’ at Karangalpady, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, on Saturday, has clarified that the District Administration shared public concern on saving trees and environment and has assured that the sacred tree would remain untouched while only its base platform would be resized and reshaped to facilitate road widening without hurting the sentiments of the devotees of the nearby temple as well as the temple authorities.
Even MLA Yogish Bhat and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who were present at the spot, assured the Hindu activists as well as the temple authorities that every effort would be made to save the tree.
It may be mentioned here that the large base platform of the sacred ‘Ashwatha Katte’ belonging to a nearby Shiva temple has been a bottleneck to the widening of the road opposite Karangalpady market. On Saturday, November 28, the MCC officers who were all set to demolish the Katte in order to facilitate the road widening, had to face stiff resistance from the Hindu activists. The timely official clarification by the DC however, has put to an end what might have otherwise been one more long drawn protest with a communal tinge.
