Mangalore, Apr 15, 2012: Addressing a meeting convened in the DC’s office to discuss the city’s water problems, Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of DK Zilla Panchayat, said that the district urgently needs Rs. 1.97 crore to deal with drinking water problems in rural areas.
N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly and MLA, presided over the meeting.
A total of 275 residential areas in DK, including 90 villages in Mangalore are facing acute drinking water problems. Thirty-one villages are supplied 1.12 lakh litres of drinking water through tankers daily. In Bantwal, 74 villages are facing drinking water problems and 13 villages are provided 30,000 litres of water through tankers, said Dr. Vijayaprakash.
Further, he said that the district has earmarked Rs. 60 lakh for the 275 areas with drinking water shortage. The ZP has released Rs. 20 lakh and has made arrangements to supply water to villages through tankers. Rs. 2 lakh has been earmarked to solve the water problems of each GP.
He also said that K. T. Shailaja Bhat, the president of the ZP, has appealed to the CM to allot grants to take up drinking water supply projects worth Rs. 6 crore.
Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the DC of DK, urged MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLA Yogish Bhat to get Rs. 2 crore released immediately as the water crisis in the district is intensifying and might get worse if the rains are delayed.
Dr. Harish Kumar, the MCC commissioner, and Additional DC Dayanand were also present.
