Bengaluru, January 2, 2025: Revenue from liquor sales saw a year-on-year growth of 4.63 per cent in Karnataka during April-December 2024 but there was some volatility in the month-wise sales, according to data from the state excise department.
Revenue from liquor sales dipped 9.86 per cent and 11.78 per cent in July and December, respectively, while May and September saw sharp rises of about 27 per cent each. The lacklustre performance in December could be attributed to the fact that New Year’s Eve fell on a weekday in 2024, whereas in 2023 it was on a Sunday.
The Excise Department also collected 69.13 per cent of its estimated revenue for the financial year 2024-2025 during April to December, as compared to 73.78 per cent in the same period last year. The department estimates to collect Rs 38,525 crore this year. Last year, the department collected Rs 34,628.98 crore, exceeding their estimated revenue by Rs 128.98 crore.
Between April and December in 2024, 3.51 crore carton boxes of beer and 5.28 crore carton boxes IML were sold in Karnataka. This has generated a revenue of Rs 26,633 crore for the excise department. This means the excise department has increased its revenue by 4.63 per cent (Rs 1177.54 crore) compared to the same period last year.
Indian Made Liquor (IML) sales by volume between the month of April to December dipped marginally this year by 1.02 per cent compared to last year. However, beer sales by volume showed an increase of 8.22 per cent.
IML sales saw a dip of 14.83 per cent in July and 3.93 per cent in December and saw a rise of 6.35 per cent in October. Beer sales saw a dip of 10.89 per cent in June and 9.91 per cent in December but witnessed a huge spike of 28.84 per cent in April, 32.44 per cent in May and 21.01 per cent in July.
The volatility in the month-wise sales depend on various factors like from where in the week a particular holiday period falls and the number of people who leave the city during the holiday period to celebrate in their home state.
