SDPI-Congress Alliance in Bantwal Council: Congress’s Vasu Poojary Elected President, SDPI’s Moonish Ali VP

Mangaluru, August 22, 2024: In Bantwal, the Congress has once again formed an alliance with the SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India) and, with their support, has taken control of the Bantwal Town Municipal Council. The election for the President and Vice President of the council was held today. As anticipated, Congress member Vasu Poojary Loreto was elected as President, while SDPI member Moonish Ali was elected as Vice President.

The Municipal Council, with a total of 27 members, requires 14 votes for a majority. The Congress initially held 12 seats, but one member’s resignation reduced their strength to 11. The BJP also had 11 seats, and the SDPI had 4. Despite the BJP receiving additional support from the local MLA and MP, totaling 13 votes, the Congress-SDPI alliance secured a majority with 15 votes.

The BJP has expressed dissatisfaction with the SDPI-Congress alliance.

Following the results, MP Capt. Brijesh Chouta commented, "Congress, in line with its inherent DNA, has formed an alliance with the SDPI to secure the positions of President and Vice President of the Bantwal Municipal Council. This move sends a clear message to society about Congress’s true alliances."

Rajesh Naik, MLA from Bantwal, stated that the Congress-SDPI alliance’s control of the Municipal Council clearly indicates their political alignment. He accused the SDPI of acting as Congress’s "B-Team" and criticized the Congress for forming secret pacts with communal forces while publicly maintaining a different stance.
