June 20: Although granted bail by the session court under surety of Rs 25,000, Samad, who was arrested for alleged involvement in the German Bakery blast of Pune and later charged under the arms case of 2009, is still in jail on Arthur Road because there is no guarantor.

Abdul Samad Batkal june 20

None of Abdul Samad’s relatives reside in Mumbai, owing to which he is having difficulties finding a guarantor. Police sources confirm that the accused was released on surety of Rs 25,000 on June 15; however, he requires a guarantor, whose documents regarding place of residence and employment in the city must be first verified before the accused can be released. Police say that a guarantor has already submitted his documents and the police are currently inspecting them. Police say that Samad might be released only on June 21, 2010, after the documents submitted by his guarantor are verified.

Samad of Bhatkal was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS on May 25 when he was getting off a Dubai - Mangalore plane. The ATS believed that it had arrested the key person in the German Bakery blast of Pune, which had killed 17 people. However, the ATS could not prove Samad’s involvement, owing to which Samad was granted bail on June 15, 2010.
