Mangalore, Jan 6, 2014: The usual hustle and bustle at the Central Market area in Mangalore was missing on January 5, Sunday. Of course there was a reason for this. The place had witnessed tension on January 5, Saturday when the Central Market Merchants’ Association staged a protest and tried to evacuate the street vendors who too went on a protest. The police had to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.
The situation at the market place on Sunday was rather quiet as an uneasy calm prevailed in the area. The places on either sides of the road outside the market which otherwise used to be occupied by the street vendors who made brisk business, were on Sunday seen occupied by cars.
The police were eon patrolling at the spot all through the day to prevent any untoward incident. Though a few street vendors did muster courage to carry out business, they had to retreat on seeing the cops.
Unlike other days, inside the Central Market, the scene was different as there was heavy rush of purchasers who otherwise used to throng around the street vendors.
It is now left to be seen how long this hide and seek game will last as on various previous occasion, the eviction drives of street side vendors in other parts of the city had helped little as the vendors repositioned themselves within days of an eviction drive.
