School girl’s suicide case: Youth gets life sentence

Mangalore, November 5: Abdul Salim, who was charged with the kidnap and rape of a minor, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the first Additional Session court.
The court has also ordered the culprit to pay a hefty fine to the parents of the deceased on Thursday, November 5.

Salim was arrested by the Mulky police after receiving a complaint from the victim’s father that Salim had kidnapped and rapped his 15 year old daughter, who later committed suicide in her house in Mulky. Later he was arrested by the Mulky police.

 
The suicide followed an incident in which the girl, her friend, and another person were beaten up by suspected Hindutva activists on February 10 and humiliated by a mob.

First Additional Sessions judge Hanchate Sanjeev Kumar on Wednesday convicted Abdul Salim under Sections 366 (kidnapping woman with intention of sexual intercourse), 376 (rape), and 305 (abetment to suicide of child) of the Indian Penal Code. On Thursday, he was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment and 10 years rigorous imprisonment to be served concurrently. Also, he has been ordered to pay fines amounting to Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the girl’s parents failing which he must serve an additional two years in jail.

The investigation was handed over to the CID. The trial began on March 18 this year. The prosecution examined 36 witnesses.
