Mangalore, December 15: Security threats have prompted Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat, who was scheduled to participate in the valedictory ceremony of the 3-day celebrations in Udupi marking the 80th birthday of Pejawar Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji on Sunday, to cancel his trip.
The Gujarat CM is the favorite disciple of Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji, who had invited him to attend the Maha Madhwa Sansthan. Although the senior swamji has expressed his disappointment, he understands that the cancellation of Modi’s visit is a required security move.
Senior intelligence officers in Karnataka advised the chief minister to cancel his trip for security reasons. Udupi’s Car Street, the venue for the celebrations, leaves VIPs such as Modi very vulnerable to attacks. Since the venue has 6 entrance points and a number of holes, high security cannot be provided for VIPs such as Modi, they said.
Following the arrest of Madoor Isubu, who was wanted for the murders of Hindutva leaders Candle Santhu, Sukhananda Shetty, and Polali Ananthu in Mangalore, the police have learned that he was planning something of great significance. His arrest has threatened the security of all VIPs visiting Udupi and Mangalore.
Isubu, who had a red corner alert issued on him, has been booked for 17 cases including murder, extortion, and robbery. Recently, he had established connection with terrorists, and police are currently investigating the same. Following the Varanasi blast engineered by the Indian Mujaheedin on Dec 7 and the arrest of Isubu, the intelligence officials are investigating possible connections between the Lakskar-e-Taiba and the Indian Mujahideen.
Modi, who is a Z plus category VIP, has already been threatened by LeT, a terrorist group based in Pakistan, which had conspired to kill Modi in June, according to information revealed by a US diplomatic cable leaked into the media by the online whistle blower WikiLeaks.
