Senior Kannada Writer M. Manorama Bhat Passes Away at 92 in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sept 15, 2024: Senior Kannada writer and women’s rights advocate M. Manorama Bhat passed away at the age of 92 in Mangaluru. She is survived by her two sons. The last rites will be performed on Wednesday afternoon.

Ms. Bhat was the wife of the late Muliya Mahabala Bhat, a scholar of Yakshagana and a lawyer, and the daughter-in-law of the renowned writer Muliya Thimmappaiah, a scholar of coastal Karnataka.


Manorama Bhat Passes Away


Throughout her life, Ms. Bhat held prominent positions, including serving as the president of Mangaluru Taluk Sahitya Sammelana and being a former president of the Karavali Lekhakiyara and Vachakiyara Sangha, Mangaluru.

She made significant contributions to Kannada literature, authoring works such as "Swayamvara," a collection of stories, and "Hennigeke Ee Shikshe," a critical analysis. She also wrote radio dramas including "Bali," "Hosahadi," "Aayke," and "Nirdhara." Additionally, Ms. Bhat edited works like "Dakshina Kannada Jilleya Modala Lekhakiyaru" and "Life and Achievement of Cartoonist Ramakrishna."

In addition to her writing, Ms. Bhat was active in the theatre as an artist and director and appeared in several Doordarshan serials. She was known for advocating women’s rights, taking up their causes in meetings with seers from various mutts and asserting the importance of women’s rights.
