Sevak Celebrates Golden Jubilee

“Sevak,” a Konkani monthly, celebrated its golden jubilee on October 11, Saturday, at Don Bosco Hall in Mangalore.

On this occasion, Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr. Aloysius P. D’Souza gave away Golden Jubilee Awards on behalf of Sevak. Each award comprised a shawl, a garland, a cash gift of Rs. 10,000, fruits, citation, and memento. The award for the largest family was bagged by Mr. Timothy Rodrigues and Mrs. Lilly Rodrigues for having 16 children; Mr. Piad Serrao and Mrs. Gracy Serrao for having the largest number of priests and nuns in the family; and Mr. John D’Souza and Mrs. Angeline D’Souza for being the longest-married couple. 

Mr. Ivan D’Souza, the Vice President of Congress, gave away Sevak Literary Competition Awards to the winners. Rev. Fr. Oswald Monteiro, Mr. Ron Roche, and Mr. Edwin Netto won the short story prizes; Br. Vinod Colaco, Br. Cyril D’Souza, and Br. Ivan D’Souza won the poetry prizes; and Rev. Fr. Oswald Monteiro, Mr. Joseph D’Souza, and Mr. Bernard D’Costa won the prizes for humor. 

Mr. Leo Rodrigues released 9 books by Sevak Prakashan. Fr. Francis Cascia released the Utsav CD. Mr. Walter D’Souza released the Sevak Golden Jubilee magazine. All those who had served as the editors of Sevak, ever since its inception 50 years ago, were honored with mementoes. 

The special guests on the dais were also honored with mementoes. Fr. Harry’s mother was honored by the bishop with a shawl, a citation, and a garland.

The bishop congratulated the Sevak team for its great achievements. In 50 years, Sevak has witnessed more than 18,000 subscribers. Moreover, Sevak is the first Konkani family magazine to foster familial and spiritual values.
