Mangalore, August 28: Sharanya Mahesh, a II BSc student at St. Aloysius College and member of Mangalore Roller Skating Club, has been chosen for the Karnataka Ekalavya Award 2011. She won 2 bronze medals at the 14th Asian Roller Skating Championships held at Kaohsiung, Taipei recently.
Sharanya, who has been skating since the age of five, has won several national and international awards. She won the individual championship title at the 45th Nationals and the gold medal at the 46th Nationals. Besides, she also participated in the World Roller Skating Championship in 2005.
Meanwhile the government has withdrawn the Ekalavya Award it had declared for P. Somashekar, the specially abled athlete, on grounds of submitting fake documents. According to government sources, Somashekar had submitted that he had won two gold medals in international athletics for the specially abled, but the government had found that the documents were forged. The state sports department has now ordered an inquiry into this case.
The government has also withheld the Ekalavya Award declared for Roshan Ferrao because the state sports department wants to re-verify his documents. The Ekalavya Award for S. Naveen (karate) has also been withdrawn, but government sources are confident that they will be declared once more eligible for these awards after the re-verification process.
