Mangalore, April 23: Infosys Children Care Centre hosted a special programme as part of the World Heath Day observance under the auspices of Dakshina Kannada district administration, DK Zilla Panchayat, and department of health and family welfare on April 23, Friday.
Speaking about the problems facing the health department, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat P. Shivashanker said that privatization is having an adverse effect on the lives of the common people because it deprives them of the rights to health care. Criticizing the government’s pro privatization policies, he accused the government of giving away government hospitals to private parties at the cost of the poor. He also alleged that the government’s 208 ambulances are serving only private hospitals.
Shivashankar also said that people hardly go to government hospitals because of the poor services they offer. He called upon the health department to serve people in rural areas, remarking that only the human faces of the doctors can attract people to government hospitals.
District Health and Family Officer Dr. H Jagannath spoke about the objectives of the World Health Day as set down by the World Health Organization (WHO). President of the Zilla Panchayath K Santhosh Kumar Bhandari presided over the programme. Dr. Sundresh welcomed the gathering. Awards and cash prizes were conferred on several government doctors and nurses in recognition of the invaluable services rendered by them.
