Mangaluru, Nov 10, 2024: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader has directed authorities to launch an investigation into a fatal accident on the Thokkottu-Chembugudde road, which claimed the life of a woman named Rahmat on Saturday. He also called for action against officials for their alleged negligence in road maintenance.
Khader, who was attending the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference in Sydney, Australia, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
According to the Speaker, Rs.30 crore had already been sanctioned for the development of the Thokkottu-Chembugudde road, with the tendering process completed. However, he noted that the start of the roadworks was delayed due to heavy rains.
Highlighting the recurring issues with potholes on this stretch, Khader revealed that he had earlier instructed the concerned authorities to address the repairs before the onset of the next monsoon. Despite these directives, the continued negligence was evident, he said.
The Speaker has now ordered a thorough investigation into the accident and has demanded accountability from officials responsible for the road’s poor condition. Emphasizing the role of the Public Works Department (PWD), he stated that it is their duty to repair potholes after every monsoon. Khader also commended the efforts of local youths from Ullal who promptly assisted at the accident scene.
