A part of the road at Kalappu is under repair, owing to which it is slippery and covered with stones and mud. The driver of Route Number 43A bus was trying to overtake another bus, which was also going to Talapady, when the bus skid toward the part of the road under repair and plunged into the gorge.

Eyewitnesses say that one of the buses was on the old part of the road, and the driver of 43A steered over to the wrong side of the new road to overtake it. Since another bus was coming from the opposite direction, he got confused and lost control of his vehicle.

Around 22 people, including driver Krishna Shetty of Talapady and conductor Suresh are injured. The condition of the driver and the conductor is very bad. Nine of the injured passengers are now in Fr. Muller Hospital, eight are in Sahara Hospital, and five are in Nethaji Hospital in Thokkottu.

MLA U. T. Khader has visited the accident site. He blamed speeding drivers and the failure of road constructors to put up appropriate sign boards for the accident. He also said that he has called a meeting of all constructors the following week to discuss this matter.
