The college had started the course without getting the university’s approval and had been unable to give degrees to the students. The issue was discussed at the recent Syndicate meeting, during which the Syndicate decided to accept the lapse and request a one-time waiver from the state government so that the students can get their degrees.

According to a reliable source, the college has apologized for the lapse and the university has decided to accept the apology only in the best interests of the students and has decided to request the state government to issue MCMS degree certificates to the students who successfully completed this course. The governor of Karnataka, who is the chancellor of Mangalore University, will take the final decision on the matter.

The university has sent a communication to the college, in which it has specifically informed the college that it is granting a one-time relief in spite of the fact that the college has not followed the proper procedure before launching the course and had started admitting students even before the university has cleared the request. University sources say that the next step will be taken as soon as the college responds. The university had approved MA communication for St. Aloysius College, and not the MCMS course.

Meanwhile, aggrieved students had gone to consumer court and had urged the college to either issue MCMS degrees or give Rs. 20 lakh as compensation to each student.
