Mangalore, August 23: Official sources have revealed that St. Aloysius College (autonomous) withdrew its case against Mangalore University and remitted over Rs. 58 lakh in registration fees to Mangalore University last week.
The government convened a meeting of authorities of autonomous colleges with the Mangalore University at Bangalore on Aug 12, following which the case was withdrawn and the fee was remitted.
Aravind Limbavalli, the minister for higher education, presided over the meeting in the presence of M. Madan Gopal, the principal secretary of higher education. Although the college had collected registration fees from PG and Degree during 2007 – 08, 2008 – 09, and 2009 – 10, it had not remitted anything to the university, owing to which the university had refused to grant degrees to PG students of autonomous colleges.
The Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society, which manages St. Aloysius College, filed a writ petition before the High Court on March 22 challenging the decision of the university. A copy of the proceedings of the meeting held on May 12 states that autonomous colleges should continue remit registration fees to the university. The autonomous colleges are also directed to continue with the 80:20 examination scheme, stated the minutes, following which the university will admit students and award degrees to them.
