Sullia, July 27, 2022: Following the brutal killing of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru on July 26, Tuesday night, the ire of the Hindu activists have now turned up against BJP leaders.
An incident wherein the car of State BJP President and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was literally gheraoed by angry activists also took place. Anguished activists surrounded the car and even tried to turn it upside down. Some even deflated the tyres of the car.
Realising that things were going out of hand, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob. Nalin later left the place amid police security. Hindu activists even argued with the cops and demanded justice. Bellare village is tense and police have stepped up vigil.
Earlier, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Minister Sunil Kumar and other BJP leaders met the grieving family of Praveen and tried to console them.
According to police, the motorcycle-borne killers attacked Praveen Nettaru, a member of the BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, while he was returning home on his bike after shutting his poultry shop.
Local residents dialled police as the killers left Nettaru bleeding on the ground. Police rushed the 32-year-old man, his clothes drenched in blood, to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The murder has sparked protests in Bellare and Sullia, with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad calling for a bandh. This morning, hundreds joined in as his body was taken to his home. Some right-wing outfits have alleged that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India are behind Nettaru’s murder.
District police chief Rushikesh Sonanay has said restrictions on public gathering have been imposed due to tension in the area. "Three assailants had come on a bike. We have information that the bike had a Kerala registration numver. We are scanning CCTV footage for clues," he said.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M. Rajendra, said the matter is being thoroughly investigated. "I spoke to the family regarding the autopsy and the funeral. We will forward the family’s requests to the government."
Security has been stepped up in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts to prevent any law and order situation. Most shops and hotes in Sullia and Puttur voluntarily shut their business establishments. Some schools have also declared a holiday in view of the tension in the area.
Six police teams have been formed to track down the killers, and 15 people have been taken into custody for questioning, sources said. Three teams have been sent to neighbouring Keral and Madikeri and Hassan.
