Sullia, February 28, 2025: Sullia and Kokkada recorded 40.4 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Thursday in Dakshina Kannada.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heatwave condition is likely to prevail over coastal Karnataka till March 1. The hot and humid condition is likely to prevail over coastal Karnataka till Friday, the IMD said in its daily report.
A normal heatwave is declared when the departure from normal temperature is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. A severe heatwave is declared when the departure is more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.
Savantvada in Uttara Kannada district recorded the highest maximum temperature of 41.1 degrees Celsius, the highest in the State, during the last 24-hour period.
The other areas that recorded temperature in the range between 39 and 41.1 degrees Celsius in the period are Uppinangady (39.6), Pane Mangaluru (39.4), Dakshina Kannada; Brahmavar (39.1), Kota (39.5), Vandse (39.9), Ajekar (39.5), all in Udupi district; Bhatkal (40.4), Belikere (Avarse) (39.8), Mavalli (39.0), Mavinakurve (39.5), Ghadasaya (40.7), Mirjan (40.5), Honnavar (39.4), and Basagod, (40.1), all in Uttara Kannada district.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, nine locations in Uttara Kannada district, and four in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts respectively recorded a maximum temperature above 39 degrees Celsius.
The Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority has asked people to avoid outdoor activities between noon and 3 p.m. People have been asked to keep themselves hydrated by drinking water, ORS, buttermilk, and lime juice. It also asked people to cover their heads, while moving in the sunny conditions.
