Sullia: Woman set afire by brother-in-law, dies in hospital

Sullia, October 25, 2024: A woman from Kallarpe in Kodiala village who had sustained serious burn injuries after her brother-in-law doused petrol over her while she was sleeping and set her afire, has died in the hospital on Thursday.

The incident had taken place on the night of October 12. The deceased is Jayabharathi (56). The accused has been identified as Shanker Nayak, the elder brother of her husband Janardhan Nayak.


Women set afire


Janardhan Nayak had died one and a half years ago. After his death Jayabharathi, her son and brother-in-law were staying in the house. Recently Jayabharathi’s son had gone abroad for job purposes and only Jayabharathi and Shanker were at the house. Shanker, a paralysis patient was taken care of by Jayabharathi. Despite it he reportedly hated her resulting in the crime.

Bellare police are investigating the case.
