Mangaluru, March 16, 2025: Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali, a work that has inspired millions across the nation, was hailed as a masterpiece during the release of its Kannada translation in Mangaluru on Sunday. Prof. Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University), released the book and described Gitanjali as a remarkable collection of poetry. He also noted that its verses find echoes in the works of renowned Kannada writers Kuvempu and D.V. Gundappa (DVG).

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Shetty highlighted Tagore’s unique journey, pointing out that despite not receiving formal education, he made extraordinary contributions to literature. “Education should inspire individuals and help uncover the hidden potential within them,” he remarked.

Prof. P.L. Dharma, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, reflected on Tagore’s legacy, emphasizing the poet’s understanding of love. “Tagore reminds us that true love cannot be confined to cages or parks—it should be free and unrestrained,” he said.

K. Jayarama Rai, President of Ramakrishna Credit Co-operative Society, extended his congratulations on the occasion. Cherkady Sachidananda Shetty, the translator of the Kannada version, delivered the introductory remarks.

The event was attended retired professor Cherkady Raghurama Shetty, Prof. Devaraj and Prof. Shankar Shetty.
