Mangalore, Dec 21, 2011: Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, has extended his Christmas greetings to the society. In his Christmas message, Bishop has said  that the Christmas celebrations  this year call  for some concern  towards the poor and destitute in the society.

Speaking at a press meet  at the Bishop House in Mangalore on December 21, Friday, the Bishop said  Christ came into the world to bring peace, and added  in the modern world Christ’s message of peace and fraternity was relevant at all times.

He said the Mangalore Diocese as a first step towards alleviating the suffering of the poor, will provide a total sum of Rs 10 lakhs to 50 students hailing from economically backward families, for their higher education. A sum of Rs 5 lakh will be utilized to provide clothing to 1000 poor people as a Christmas gift, he added.

Further, the Bishop said that construction of 165 homes in commemoration of 125 years of Diocese are nearing  completion. So far, construction of over  126 houses has been completed, he added. He also said that 28 houses, each costing Rs 3.6 lakh will be constructed and given to very poor families at Talapady.

“Christmas is birth of Christ. He is to be reborn in our hearts, families, societies and environment.  Let peace and harmony prevail in the society,” the Bishop said in his Christmas message.

Henry Sequeira, Chancellor of Mangalore Diocese, William Menezes, PRO, Raymond D’Cunha and Marcel Monteiro were also present.
