Mangaluru, April 20, 2025: The Thumbe dam, managed by Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), has reached its full capacity, ensuring 40 days of uninterrupted water supply to the city even in the absence of rainfall. This increase in water levels is credited to recent pre-monsoon showers across Dakshina Kannada district.
According to officials, the AMR dam, located upstream of Thumbe, has also seen a significant rise in water levels. On Saturday, the water level at the 6-meter capacity Thumbe dam was recorded at 5.9 meters, just shy of its full capacity. The dam’s storage of 10.5 million cubic meters (MCM) at 6 meters is sufficient to meet the city’s water needs for 40 days, accounting for evaporation losses.
Officials highlighted that the continued inflow into the dam, due to rainfall in the Nethravati River’s catchment areas, is expected to maintain water levels. Comparatively, the water level at Thumbe dam on April 19, 2024, was 5.2 meters.
The AMR dam, which can store up to 12.5 MCM at 18.9 meters, was also at full capacity as of Saturday, an increase from 16.5 meters recorded on April 19, 2024.
In case of emergencies, MCC has the option to pump water from the Harekala dam, located downstream of Thumbe dam. Additionally, water from the AMR dam can be released to replenish Thumbe dam’s storage, officials said.
This development provides a much-needed respite for the city as it braces for the summer months ahead.
