Train Service Resumes on Konkan Railway Route

Mangalore, June 30: Train services in Mangalore that were disrupted due to a landslide have resumed as usual on Wednesday, June 30.

Train services between Mumbai-Margao and Mangalore on Konkan railway route was cancelled due to landslides and inundated water on the railway track caused by torrential rains. The incident occurred on Saturday 26.  Since then there was no train service on Konkan Railway route. The tracks were buried in a heap of boulders and mud after the landslide, causing heavy water logging in the area.

Minutes after the landslide, railway workers in the area informed Mangalore Junction of the incident, who quickly swung into action. Subsequently, all the trains coming from Kerala were stopped at Mangalore while those coming to Mangalore from Goa and Udupi were stopped at Suratkal.

The passengers, who have booked ticket to reach their destination, were affected by the suspension of train service on these routes. The railway authority had compelled them to move in private buses from Mangalore to Surathkal railway station. After the land slide, Mumbai bound train started their service from Suratkal instead of from Mangalore. The railway department had arranged buses to take passengers who have reserved tickets to Mumbai to the Suratkal Railway Station.

The Southern Railways has set a 48 hours deadline to clear the debris of the landslips on the track between Padil and Thokur railway stations, about 10 km from Mangalore. The sunshine on Tuesday helped the workers to carry on with their work, but the rain water as well as drain water seepage at several places, hampered the restoration work.

Hence, there is no guarantee that the train service will be on for more days, as landslide, along the Konkan railway route, will occur in the future also said railway authority.
