Mangaluru, Dec 29, 2024: The state cabinet has approved the construction of two new bridges in the Mangaluru constituency to alleviate traffic congestion on NH-66 and promote tourism in the region, said Speaker UT Khader on Saturday.
A major project involves building a new bridge parallel to the Nethravati bridge, connecting Kotepura in Ullal with Bolar in Mangaluru city. Estimated to cost ₹200 crore, the 1.5 km-long bridge will be one of the region’s longest. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared by a consultant through the Public Works Department (PWD), Khader informed.
Highlighting the historical significance of Kotepura as a business hub before the Nethravati bridge was constructed, Khader noted that it served as a key location for loading and unloading goods transported from the port to Kerala.
The upcoming 12-meter-wide bridge will feature a design offering views of the Arabian Sea. Upon completion, it is expected to reduce traffic on NH-66 via Pumpwell by 50%. It will also provide an alternative route for residents of Bunder, Kudroli, and Bolar.
Additionally, Khader revealed plans for a seaside road from Kotepura to the Kerala border, aimed at enhancing tourism and business opportunities in the region.
Another bridge project, sanctioned at ₹62 crore, will connect Sajipa Nadu and Thumbe, benefiting residents of Arkula, Meramajalu, and Thumbe. Currently, people from Sajipa must travel via Melkar and Bantwal to reach Thumbe. Khader mentioned that the demand for this bridge was raised even before he assumed the Speaker’s role.
Addressing concerns about pedestrians struggling to cross the railway line between Thokkottu and Olapete, Khader announced plans for a footbridge. Funding for the project will be allocated from his MLA Local Area Development (LAD) funds and the Ullal City Municipality, subject to approval from the railways.
Responding to queries about the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) probe into alleged offences by BJP MLA Munirathna, Khader said discussions would be held regarding the application seeking authorisation for his prosecution.
