Mangaluru, Jan 12, 2025: The two-day art festival ‘Kala Parba’ kicked off at Kadri Park on Saturday, showcasing a wide array of drawings, sculptures, and artefacts from artists across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kerala.

Over 120 stalls lined the road to Kadri Park, featuring creations from both seasoned and emerging artists. Highlights included 72-year-old Kannur-based artist Rajan’s acrylic paintings of mythological themes like ‘Ananthashayana’ and ‘Durga Devi,’ and Udupi’s D.L. Achar’s landscapes and portraits of Yakshagana artist Sanjeeva Suvarna.

Young talents also shone, with Class 8 student Adith and Dr. B. Jayaprakash presenting works on Tulunadu’s cultural traditions. PU student Jyeshta Kotekar exhibited fiber-made ‘Huli Vesha’ masks, while artisans from C.E. Kamath Institute in Udupi displayed Krishna Shila sculptures.

Interactive stalls drew large crowds, including caricature artist K. Laxminarayana, who charged ₹100–₹200 for portraits, and Daya’s charcoal drawing experience for ₹50. Artist John Chandran’s life-sized actor caricatures were a hit for selfies.

Traditional art also found space, with Roppa Vasundhara Acharya’s creations from dry leaves and flowers, and Sukaya Nagaraj’s macrame wall hangings and ‘Goodu Deepas.’ A drawing competition for 70 children and a lively traditional dance by Siddi tribe members from Uttara Kannada added vibrancy to the event.

The festival concludes Sunday, promising another day of cultural celebration.
