Udupi: Police fire at crime accused trying to escape from custody near Hiriyadkka

Udupi, March 13, 2025: Udupi police fired at the leg of Issac, a crime accused who is said to be a ‘Garuda gang’ member, when he allegedly tried to escape from police custody after overpwering at Guddeangadi under Hiriyadkka police station limits on Wednesday evening.

Issac injured on a leg in the firing, which took place at about 7.15 p.m., was admitted to a hospital in Manipal with some police personnel, who were also injured in the scuffle which ensued while catching Issac during escape, police said.

Udupi Superintendent of Police K. Arun said that Issac and others were wanted by police in a case registered at Manipal police station. A team of Udupi police arrested him and three others from a place under Channarayapatna police station limits in Hassan district on Wednesday noon. While they were being brought to Manipal later, Issac requested police to stop the vehicle as he wanted to relieve himself and also vomit.

After relieving himself he pushed the accompanying police personnel using the leading chain on his hand and tried to escape. In the scuffle, the leading chain hit the front windowpane of the police vehicle, shattering it. Some police personnel were injured in the incident.

Then Inspector of the Manipal Police Station Devaraj warned Issac against trying to escape. When the accused did not listen the Inspector fired a round in the air. Still when the accused tried to escape the police official fired at Issac injuring on his leg.

It may be mentioned here that Issac had escaped in Manipal on March 4 at night when Nelamangala Rural Police from Bengaluru had come to secure him in a case registered in Nelamangala.

He had damaged three other vehicles, including a police jeep, while escaping in his car. Issac made a dramatic escape when police made a filmi style chase to arrest him.
