Udupi, August 25, 2024: Udupi SP Dr. Arun K has warned of strict action against those spreading misinformation about the rape incident in Karkala, clarifying that it was not a gang rape.

Following the incident’s disclosure on Saturday, some, including BJP leaders V Sunil Kumar and MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, incorrectly labeled it a ’gang rape’ and suggested communal motives, calling it a case of ’love jihad.’

However, Dr. Arun K stated that preliminary investigations indicate it is not a gang rape. He noted that the FIR names Altaf as the sole accused, and the victim, still in shock, has not indicated gang rape in her initial statement to the doctor. A medical report is pending for further clarification.

According to the sources, the accused Altaf reportedly lured the victim to a secluded location, claiming to own a plot of land there. He then led her into a forested area where two other individuals were waiting. After giving her a drink laced with drugs, he sexually assaulted her while she was under the influence. The victim began screaming, prompting Altaf to drive her back home. During the journey, she vomited and was semi-conscious upon arrival. Her family members and locals later admitted her to the hospital.

MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta criticized the state’s law and order situation and linked the incident to rising drug abuse, claiming it highlights the failure of the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah. He urged for stricter punishment for the accused.

Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar termed the incident ’love jihad,’ alleging a targeted assault on Hindu women, and called for stronger measures against such acts. BJP MLA D Vedavyas Kamath attributed the incident to the Congress government’s ’appeasement politics.’

The Hindu Hitharakshana Samithi, Karkala unit, plans to protest on August 26 to condemn the crime.
