Udupi: Senior citizen loses over Rs 3 lakh to online fraud

Udupi, February 17, 2025: A person posing as a bank official allegedly cheated a 80-year-old resident of Brahmavar in Udupi district of Rs 3.28 lakh in an online fraud.

In a complaint to Brahmavar police, the 80-year-old victim said he wanted to withdraw ₹5 lakh cash from his Canara Bank savings bank account. He went to Google and searched for the mobile number of the bank branch manager  wanting to inform that he needed the cash. Then he saw a mobile number displayed as branch manager of Canara Bank and called up the same number. The person (fraudster) on the other side received the call of the senior citizen and cut it. The fraudster then made a video call and a voice call to the victim.


Online fraud


The unknown person speaking in Hindi asked the victim to click on the link that he sent to make changes in the Google Pay app settings and told the senior citizen that if clicked link the bank will automatically get an intimation that he required Rs 5 lakh cash. Soon after the victim clicked on the link, fraudster withdrew a total of Rs 3.28 lakh from victim’s account.

The Brahmavar police registered the complaint for offence under Section 66 (D) of Information Technology Act.
