Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2016: Speaking to media Mangaluru Mayor Harinath said that a proposal was submitted to the City Corporation by Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation towards establishing a bust of former MP Ullal Srinivas Mallya at Padil junction and naming the junction after him.
The agenda was discussed in the MCC Council meeting and a notification was passed in March this year, asking the public to file objections if any, but as there were no objections, the resolution was passed by the Council. The same will be sent to the government. The proposal by the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation, asked for permission to install the bust at either Padil Junction or Circuit House Junction. It has already been decided that the junction in front of the Circuit house will be named after Sidda Yogi Jwalanath and the resolution sent to the government.
Vishwa Konkani Kendra chairman Basti Vaman Shenoy said that the three-foot tall stone bust is ready, sculpted by Radhamadhava Shenoy, grandson of sculptor Renjal Gopal Shenoy in Karkala. An enclosure with pillars and lighting arrangements as well as a garden will be built around the bust. The Kendra has sought permission from the National Highway, Shenoy said.
During his tenure as MP of the region, Mallya pioneered various development works in Mangaluru region, such as the Mangalore-Hassan railway project, National Highways 17 and 48. He was also responsible for establishing the New Mangalore Port Trust, the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (the present NITK) and the Mangalore Airport, among other institutions.
