Mangalore, Feb 6, 2012: The University College of Mangalore and Students Union 2011 – 12 observed the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in the Ravindra Kala Bhavan of University College on Feb 6 Monday. 


Chakravarthi Soolibele, the resource person of the occasion, inaugurated the event and said in his inaugural address that a torch light rally was held in most cities to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He said that Vivekananda Jayanthi is celebrated all over India as he is revered as a saint who reached out to the youth and enlightened the country. He said that the inspiration of Vivekananda is the strength of the youth and the country.

Further, Soolibele said that modern youth are getting attracted to Western culture, but Swami Vivekananda introduced the West to the spiritual wealth of India. He said that India was listed as the most downtrodden countries when Swami Vivekananda visited America, but now it is listed as a technologically, medically, and educationally advanced country. He urged the youth to imbibe the qualities of Swami Vivekananda. 


Soolibele said that at present youths are following the western culture, but Swami Vivekananda was one who discovered soul of America to them. He never thought for himself but always thought and worked for his country


Principal H. R. Lakshminaraya presided over the event and said that Swami Vivekananda was one of the most cultured people of his time. Expressing his appreciation for the discipline of the students of University College, he said that this shows that they are influenced by Vivekananda and the words of Soolibele. 


Guruprasad, the president of the students’ union, delivered the welcome address. Prof. Harish, Shravan Kumar, Harinakshi, and Ashwini were on the dais.
