VHP and Bajrang Dal demand immediate closing down of Kudroli abattoir

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Apr 16, 2012: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal organized a joint protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on April 16 Monday demanding that the abattoir at Kudroli must be closed down immediately.

Although the abattoir is owned by the MCC, the organizations feel that it is illegal and must be closed down immediately.

Delivering the protest address, M. B. Puranik said that the abattoir has not been constructed as per the law.

Gurpur Vajradehi Swamiji, one of the protestors, said that animals were killed in a cruel manner in the abattoir.

Stating that the abattoir is being run in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, the protestors maintained that the MCC has not developed the abattoir in any way.

According to the protestors, slaughter houses are required to have basic meat testing facilities to determine the quality of meat and find out if it was fit for human consumption, but the abattoir at Kudroli does not have any such facilities. They added that no one would know even if the cows that died after grazing at Ottinene were brought to Kudroli for slaughter.

The protestors also alleged that calves are being slaughtered in the abattoir, which is in violation of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act of 1964 and therefore punishable by law.

Among the protestors were Sharan Pumpwell, Manohar Tulajaram, Harish Amtady, and Pradeep Pumpwell.
