Bengaluru, Feb 9, 2025: Former Karnataka Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily has called for the establishment of a second National Law University (NLU) in Mangaluru. In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Moily urged the announcement of the initiative in the upcoming state budget.
Highlighting his role in setting up the first National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, Moily noted its success as a pioneering institution. "The NLSIU has become a model for legal education in the country, inspiring the creation of 27 National Law Universities across India," he stated.
Moily pointed out that several states now host more than one NLU and emphasized the need for Karnataka to follow suit. "Establishing a second NLU in Mangaluru would protect the interests of Karnataka students by providing a 50% reservation and focus on emerging fields such as technology and law, maritime laws, cyber security, and artificial intelligence," he added.
He proposed a broader framework for the institution, suggesting the name National University of Law and Public Policy. This would allow the university to offer innovative courses in law, management, technology, medicine, and public policy, requiring a dedicated statute to bring it to fruition.
If formalities are completed within the 2025-26 fiscal year, Moily anticipates that the second NLU could become operational by 2026-27.
