Mangaluru, Jan 10, 2023: Veteran writer Dr Saara Aboobakker  passed away at a private hospital in the city on January 10, Tuesday afternoon. She was 87 years of age. Saara Aboobakker has left behind her four sons and innumerous admirers.

Sara was born in a Malayalam-speaking family from Kasaragod to advocate P Ahmad and Zainabi on June 30, 1936. She was one of the first girls in her community of Muslim families in Kasargod to be educated, graduating from a local Kannada school. She bid goodbye to her studies after her marriage with Abu Bakar, an engineer. But Sara was always interested in reading and addicted to the writings of Shivaram Karantaru, Inamdar, Bhairappa, Ananthamurthy and Vaikom Basheer.

Her first novel "Chandragiriya Theeradalli" was widely acclaimed. Sara wrote Sahana, Vajragalu, Kadanavirama, Suliyalli Sikkavaru, Paravaha Suli, Tala Odeda Doni, Panjara, Ilijaru, Kanike etc novels. She has written compilation of stories like Chappaligalu, Payana and other stories, Ardharathriyalli Huttida Koosu and Khedda. Her radio dramas include Kamarida Kanasu, Magalu Huttidalu, Theladuva Modagalu, Thala and Heegu Ondu Baduku. Lekana Guccha, Manomi, Bale, Naninnu Nidrisuve are her translations. She has also written a travelogue named Aisharamadalli. Sara has won several awards, including the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi award, Karnataka Rajyotsava award, B Sarojadevi award of Kannada Parishad and Daana Chintamani Attimabbe award.

Her mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at her residence at Hathill in Mangaluru and final rites will be held at 8 pm today.

Many dignitaries have mourned the death of Sara Abubakar, including leader of the opposition party, Siddaramaiah who tweeted about the death of the veteran writer.
