Mangalore, August 27, 2010: The police will be tough with anti-social elements and good with law-abiding people, assured Alok Mohan, the new Inspector General of Police – Western Range. Addressing his first press conference this morning after assuming office, he said, his department will function impartially and act as per the law. 

Alok Mohan, who has taken over as the new inspector general of police (western range) from Gopal B. Hosur, will supervise police operations of four districts: DK, Chikmagalur, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada.

Trying to strike a cordial note with the media, he said, “The media is essential for the police department to function effectively. It is essential for the police department to build a healthy relationship with the media so that police information can be effectively disseminated to the public.” He also urged the police department to meet the expectations of the public. 

Alok Mohan, who has a public service experience of 23 years at the state, national, and international levels, joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1987. He was the assistant superintendent of police and district superintendent of police in several districts of Karnataka and the assistant inspector general of police at Bangalore and at the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at New Delhi.

He was also the deputy inspector general of police, state CID, Bangalore; joint police commissioner (crime) at Bangalore city; inspector general of police (IGP) at Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF); and IGP (vigilance and enforcement) at KPTCL and all Escoms, energy department, Bangalore.

Alok Mohan has also served as the commander of the International Police Task Force (IPTF), UN Peace Keeping Operation in Bosnia Herzegovina and has taken the command course with the British Police.

He has also received the Director General’s Commendation Disc, the UN Peace Medal, and the Police Medal from the president in recognition of his meritorious services in the department.

Dr. A. S Rao, Police Superintendent of DK was also present during the press conference.
