Beltangady, March 12, 2025: A large wildfire has consumed thousands of acres in the lower region of Netravati Peak, continuing to burn for the past two to three days. The fire, which reportedly began accidentally near Didupe’s Godown Hill, spread rapidly due to dry weather, damaging vegetation and threatening nearby homes.

Initially igniting on private land, the fire quickly spread to government-owned forest areas, destroying trees and plants. Strong winds and dry conditions fueled the flames, which reached roadside areas before advancing toward the hills. Residents in the area have been working to prevent the fire from reaching their homes.

Firefighting efforts have faced significant challenges due to a shortage of fire engines. The nearest available engine, from Moodbidri, was dispatched from nearly 70 km away, as engines from Puttur and Bantwal were unavailable. The fire, which broke out around noon, was not attended by the fire engine until 3 PM, by which time it had already spread extensively.

By evening, another fire was reported near a turn on the Ujire-Dharmasthala road, close to the Netravati river, adding to concerns.

Additionally, a separate fire has been burning in the Kalenjimale Reserve Forest near Vittal, allegedly set by miscreants. The forest has been aflame for three days, destroying large areas of vegetation. Two firefighting teams, supported by over 50 local volunteers, have been working to control the blaze, but as of Tuesday evening, it remains uncontained.
