Mangalore, Nov 2: The Women and Child Welfare Department of Mangalore and the Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation of Bangalore jointly organized the Exhibition and Sale Mela at Mahila Sabha on Light House Hill Road, where handicrafts and eatables manufactured by Stri Shakti groups were exhibited and sold on Nov 2, Tuesday.

Inaugurating the event, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar said that women are now capable of standing on their own feet thanks to self-help groups such as Stri Shakti.

Just before the inauguration, Sarojini Bharadwaj, the honorary president of Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation, Bangalore, said that the corporation works to provide social and economic development schemes for house wives who want to earn their own livelihood, guides them to choose manufacturing activities best for them, and offers them technical advice. Besides, it offers loans and helps them launch their business. SC/ST widows and handicapped women will be given financial assistance worth Rs. 10,000, while other women will be given Rs. 7,500 by the corporation, she said. Mrs. Bharadwaj also spoke of the corporations plans to launch a centre in Mangalore for the benefit of the local women.

A wide variety of pickles, gold-plated ornaments, bags, ayurvedic medicines, and other items were displayed at the exhibition.

Mayor Rajani Dugganna, President of Mahila Sabha Sumathi Pangala, and Prafulla D. Rao were also present.
