President of DK Consumer Forum, Consumer Information Centre, Mangalore M J Salian spoke about the importance of World Consumer Day and said that the consumer protection law was enacted in the American Parliament on this day. Speaking about the necessity of consumer awareness, he urged the listening students to enhance public awareness and bring about changes in the society.

CEO of District Panchayat DK P Shivashankar said that, despite the fact that 26 years have elapsed after the passing of the consumer law in India, the people have not shown any positive response to it. Lack of information is responsible for this, he remarked, adding that the consumer information centre continues to be a ray of hope. He also lauded the efforts of the centre.

Shri U K Kumarnath, the resident editor of Vijaya Karnataka, Mangalore inaugurated the Kannada consumer monthly magazine “Grahaka Chaya” and said that the consumer is the decision maker; however, nobody pays attention to the consumers’ complaints. He cited a few examples of how people successfully fought for their rights and received compensation.

Student Consumer Clubs of various schools and colleges were given awards and grants.
