Mangalore June 6: The Yenepoya School in collaboration with the Yenepoya Group organized the Yenepoya Green Run on June 6, Sunday in celebration of World Environment Day. More than 200 people, the majority of whom were students, participated in this marathon.
IGP of Western Range Gopal B. Hosur inaugurated the event at Pumpwell Circle at 7 a.m. Environmental Officer of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Rajesh Kumar and Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya University Shripathi Rao were the chief guests of the event.
The participants covered a distance of 4kms through the city. The green run commenced at Pumpwell Circle and ended at Karavali Circle, after passing through Fr. Muller Circle Kankanady before taking a U turn and returning to Pumpwell Circle. The participants gathered on the grounds of Yenepoya School on the outskirts of Mangalore.
The participants, both men and women, belonged to different categories according to age groups of 15 – 25 years, 25 – 35 years, and above 35 years.
The valedictory ceremony of the Green Run was organized on the premises of Yenepoya School. MLA U. T. Khader, who was the chief guest of the occasion, lauded the organizers of the event and expressed his concern for nature. Chancellor of Yenepoya University Y. Abdullah Kunhi presided over the programme and said that the marathon was organized to generate awareness among the people of Mangalore about the dangers of pollution and to urge them to work for a clean environment.
MLA U. T. Khader presented trophies for those who finished first, second, and third in each category.
