Mangalore, Feb 13: The Sri Rama Sene’s bundh call for the second successive day on Saturday, has disrupted normal life in Mangalore and Udupi with buses remaining off the roads and most of the shops and business establishments downing their shutters. Most of the schools in the districts have also remained closed and roads wore a deserted look.
In Udupi tension prevailed in the early hours of Saturday when miscreants stoned the residence of former union minister and senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes in Udupi.
The window panes of the residence of Oscar were shattered in the stoning. However no one was in the house when the incident took place. Meanwhile, miscreants even stoned the residence of former minister Vasanth V Salian of the Congress in Kaup, indicating that miscreants were targeting the residences of Congress leaders in an act of vengeance to Friday’s incident. Even the window panes of Salian’s house and a car parked in front of the house were damaged in the stoning.
Mangalore Police arrested 14 persons for fomenting rioting and damaging public transport buses and 20 under preventive measure. They will remain in custody till 15th to prevent any disturbances during bundh and on Valentine’s day. Police sources said that the arrest have been made in view of some disruptive elements trying to disturb the communal sentiments
A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, Superintendent of police, has warned that those who have called for the bandh will be held responsible for all the loss during bundh.
Communal tension
The communal tension that haunted in some parts of the district for the last one week is under total control of police. But the stone pelting and rioting by miscreants that damaged many buses in the city on Thursday night and Friday morning the police accounted prompted the city police to take preventive action.
Ullal area remains tense due to stabing incidents on Thursday and Friday. Section 144 has been declared in Ullal area to prevent further escalation. Situations is under control as of now.
The BJP government in Karnataka on Friday put police on high alert ahead of Valentine’s Day to counter the threat by right-wing outfit Shri Rama Sene to disrupt the celebrations.
Bangalore city police commissioner Shankar Bidari said those who want to celebrate Valentine’s Day festivities, which falls on February 14, could go ahead and they could seek police help in case of any problem.
“Those celebrating Valentine’s day should not cross the limits. Same rule applies to moral policing," Home Minister Dr V S Acharya said, sending a clear warning to Sene activists.
