Manipal, Jan 30, 2020: The stipend sanctioned to victims of endosulfan poisoning and differently abled people should be doubled, members of the district unit of Karnataka Disabled Okkuta urged, while staging a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Wednesday.
Okkuta President Venkatesh Koni said that the stipend of Rs 1,500 for endosulfan victims should be increased to Rs 3,000. “A stipend of Rs 3,000 should be increased to Rs 6,000. The distribution of aids and appliances for differently abled should not be delayed. The subsidy amount for the differently abled to set up petty shops should be increased to Rs 2 lakh,” he demanded.
“The pending stipend should be released immediately and the monthly stipend should be deposited in the account by 15 of every month. The caretakers taking care of mentally challenged and bed-ridden victims should be given a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000,” he stressed.
Koni added, “The government had not released any funds for the construction of an endosulfan rehabilitation centre and a hospital for endosulfan victims on the five acres of land identified in Nada in Byndoor. The travelling limit in free bus passes should be extended. Special counters should be opened for the differently abled and the senior citizens in all government offices.”
Later, a delegation submitted a memorandum with the demands to the deputy commissioner.
