16 Beary couples get married at mass marriage ceremony

Mangalore, Nov 24, 2011 : Sixteen Beary couples got married at a mass marriage ceremony held by Al Wafa Charitable Trust at Unity Hall in Thokkottu on Nov 23.

Twaka Ahmed Musliar, the Qazi of Mangalore, solemnized the Nikah and P. M. Ibrahim Musliyar Bekar, the Qazi of Udupi, inaugurated the event.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA U. T. Khader urged the Muslim community to get involved in works of charity and work for the development of the community. Expressing his appreciation of the organizers for holding mass marriage ceremonies twice annually, he said that it helps poor families, who cannot afford to get married, and also helps to eliminate the dowry evil.

Presiding over the event, Mohammed Badruddin, the chairman of the Al Wafa Trust, said that the aim of the trust is to assist the needy by providing job opportunities, funds for education, and others. He said that the trust organizes mass marriages for the benefit of poor families who cannot afford expensive marriage ceremonies.

Each couple received clothes worth Rs. 12,000, 5 sovereigns of gold, and meals.

Prominent personalities such as B. A. Mohidin, the former state education minister; Abdullah Monu Mohidin, the president of the South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association of Doha; entrepreneurs Hathim Kanchi, the Sunni leader, and Mohammed Ullal Soofi; M. Shaukat Shauri, the president of a fishmeal and oil manufacturing unit; and Abdul Rauf Puttige, the proprietor of Vishwas Bawa Builders were also present.
