Shirva, 04 August 2010: The closing function of two days dance competition, “Nrithyotsva-2010” conducted jointly by the Students’ Welfare Association of the Mangalore University and St. Marys College, Shirva was held on Wednesday, 3rd August 2010 at St. Mary’s College Audiroeium, Shirva. Mrs. Glady D’Almeida, president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat distributed prizes to the winners of the dance competition. Fr. Stany Tauro, Correspondent of St. Mary’s Educational Institutions presided over the function.
Alva’s College, Moodbidri, has lifted the overall championship trophy in the Nrithyotsava-2010, an inter-college dance competition.
Udupi Zilla Panchayat President Gladis D Almeida speaking after distributing prizes to the winners, said that the classical and folk arts face challenges in the modern world.
Though children have sufficient platforms to showcase their talents in cinematic dances, rural talent are not being encouraged properly. Hence, she said, universities should take initiatives to promote folk and classical arts.
Shirva St Mary Education Institution Convener Fr Stany Tavro presided. College Principal Dr J C Miranda, Mangalore University Students Welfare Committee Director Prof Vincent D’Souza, festival convener Fr Edwin D’Souza, Student Leader Roshan, Economics Department Head Dr A Lobo, Dr GAnesh Bhat, Dr Padmanabha and others were present.
The following colleges won the prizes in various categories:
Classical dance: First postion: Alva’s College, Moodbidri
Second Position: Canara College, Mangalore
Third Position: St. Agnes college, Mangalore
Folk dance: First Prize: Alva’s College, Moodbidri
Second Prize: Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal
Third Position: Beary’s College, Kundapura
The Overall Championship was awarded to Alva’s College, Moodbidri
