Mangaluru, 08 May 2015: Thursday evening’s half an hour pre monsoon thunder shower has exposed the un preparedness of Mangalore City Corporation, Public Works Department (PWD), National highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other agencies.
Soon after the rain service road on Mangaluru – Mumbai highway near Kottara was flooded with rain water because faulty road design and lack of adequate storm water drainage facility. In addition to these, there were number of building came up in this low laying area of Lower Kottara in violation of building regulations and encroachment of drains.
The highway work between Kottara and Kodikal cross was in pathetic condition and water flooding is common in these parts of the four lane national highway and service road. Because of the unprescedent growth in construction and failure of of on the parts of the NHAI to elevate the highway coupled with MCC’s inability to properly maintain the storm water drainage.
This is a wakeup call for Mangaluru City Corporation officials to initiate action for preparing to welcome the monsoon, which is expected at the end of May.
The MCC yet to identify the work of cleaning and de-silting the storm water drainage in the city and filling up of pothole on the road sides in various parts of city.
