Mangalore, April 16: CM B. S. Yeddyurappa distributed loans to fisherwomen at a special felicitation programme organized by the state BJP Meenugara Sangha held in Town Hall on April 16, Saturday.
Ramachandra Baikampady, the president of KDFC, delivered the introductory address, in which he said that there are around 80 lakh fisherwomen in Karnataka. Speaking of the various problems facing these fishermen and fisherwomen, he urged the state government to take firm steps toward the protection of rivers and to take stern action against large industries that polluting rivers with dangerous chemical waste.
Inaugurating the event, the CM said that he was happy to see around 2432 fishermen from Mulky, Someshwar, and Ullal participating in the event. Vijaya Bank will provide loans of Rs. 50,000 to each fisherman and fisherwoman at the rate of 3 percent interest, he said.
Speaking about the importance of fishing in the region, he said that he was happy to learn that the fishing community is using artificial methods of breeding prawns in water bodies sprawling over 8,000 hectares of land. He also urged the fishing community to use the benefits provided for them, and to return the loans taken by them at the right time.
He also said that the state government has sanctioned thrice the funds sanctioned by previous governments for the development of the fishing community during its 3 years in power. He also said that the state government has provided 25,000 houses for fisherwomen and that everybody in the fishing community will get houses during these 2 years.
The CM also said that the third phase of projects worth Rs. 57 crore have been launched to develop the infrastructure of Malpe. He also assured the fisherwomen that they will receive financial assistance worth Rs. 50 crore in future and promised them that he will raise the loans from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000 in future, if required.
Saritha Bengre handed over a memorandum to the CM on behalf of the fishing community, and Yogin Karkera received the document on behalf of all the beneficiaries. Vasanth Naik Maskeri and SC Naik Gokarna from Uttara Kannada and M. Roopaksh and Madhavayya grabbed this opportunity to present a memorandum on behalf of the Pre University Lecturers’ Association, requesting a rise in pay scale.

Palemar; MP Nalin Kumar Kateel; Captain Ganesh Karnik; Coatal Development Authority B. Nagaraj Shetty; Mayor Praveen Anchan, Anwar Manippady; Nithin Kumar, Chandrahas Ullal, Srikhar Prabhu, and others were also present.
